A man was hospitalized Friday after he drove his car over a cliff and it landed in the ocean off Palos Verdes. The 19-year-old Los Angeles man survived a 300-foot plunge off a Palos Verdes Estates cliff early Friday told officers he was trying to kill himself, police said. The driver, who was not identified, was hospitalized in serious condition. Police responded at 1:52 a.m. to a report of a vehicle over a cliff in the 1300 block of Paseo del Mar. The vehicle, a 2000 Mitsubishi, was at the bottom at the water’s edge, about 300 feet down. Officers could hear the man calling for help. Los Angeles County firefighters joined the rescue effort, removing the man from the car, hoisting him to a helicopter and flying him to County Harbor-UCLA Medical Center near Torrance. Police said the evidence at the scene and the man’s own statements indicated he was trying to commit suicide. A witness said the young man stopped his car at the cliff’s edge and sat for a while. Then he pushed the gas pedal and the car went over, Palos Verdes Estates police Sgt. Luke Hellinga said. Police also found tire tracks and fluid where the car had stood. The man also spoke to officers after his rescue. Story provided by: Daily Breeze
