Angelenos have said goodbye to 2013 and to plastic bags. The city of Los Angeles has become the largest U.S. city to ban single-use plastic bags at major grocery stores. Shoppers now have to choose between bringing their own reusable bags or buying paper bags that cost 10 cents apiece. Similar laws are already on the books in other Southland cities, including Glendale, Pasadena and Santa Monica. City Councilman Paul Koretz, who authored the measure, said the law will go a long way towards ensuring a brighter environmental future for the city. it has been reported that we use up over 2 billion plastic bags a year in L.A. alone which is such a great source of litter, it causes a lot of harm to our rivers and our oceans. Smaller “mom-and-pop” type stores will have until July 1 to comply with the new law. Story provided by: ABC7 News

A 19-year-old suspect wanted in connection to two arson fires in Torrance is dead after a confrontation with police at Madrona Middle school on Thursday. According to investigators, Asa James Dolak was found hiding in a bathroom inside the school in Torrance. They said Dolak was armed with a knife and had blood on his hands. He allegedly confronted officers before fleeing the bathroom. Dolak ran outside to a school field where another confrontation happened, forcing police to open fire, officials said. He was pronounced dead at the scene at about 1:35 p.m. Asa Dolak was wanted in connection with two arson fires and an attempted murder in Torrance early Thursday. Police say that shortly after midnight, Dolak threatened his ex-girlfriend with a knife in her apartment on the 16700 block of Crenshaw Boulevard, where she lived with their 2-year-old son. "As she ran out of the location, he then set the apartment on fire. He fled the location and left the 2-year-old there, basically to burn to death," said Torrance Police Sgt. Robert Watt. Police and firefighters rescued the child. He was transported to a hospital for smoke-inhalation and was expected to recover. Other residents were forced out of the four-unit apartment building, which sustained extensive damage. At about 2 a.m., Dolak allegedly set fire to his mother's home on the 3200 block of Opal Avenue. She escaped unharmed. Investigators said they had talked to Dolak by phone after the second fire. "He advised our officers that he was upset with his family, that he was going to kill his family if they contacted him, and if police were going to contact him, he was going to kill the police, and he was going to do so every 20 minutes upon contact with us," said Watt. Dolak had a history of petty crimes, and was also known for several domestic disputes with his ex-girlfriend. She had filed a restraining order against Dolak. Anyone with information about the case was asked to contact Torrance Police at (310) 618-5570. Story provided by: Abc7 News

The uncle of a 13-year-old Northern California girl declared brain dead by a judge today says he's hoping for a Christmas Eve miracle. Jahi McMath's family says she bled profusely and went into cardiac arrest following a tonsillectomy. They've been fighting to prevent Children's Hospital in Oakland from taking her off life support. The judge sided with the hospital today after hearing from two doctors, but has given the teen's family until 5 p.m. Dec. 30 to file an appeal. She will stay on life support until then. The doctors testified today that the teen couldn't breathe on her own when the ventilator was briefly removed during tests. Judge Evelio Grillo expressed his sympathy but said that he was powerless to order the hospital to keep Jahi on life support. The girl's uncle says he and the family would discuss and decide whether to appeal or to allow the hospital to remove the Jahi from the ventilator. A court appointed doctor testified on Tuesday that 13-year-old Jahi McMath is brain dead after suffering complications following a tonsillectomy. Story provided by: ABC News
