In a historic swirl of commerce and cannabis, the world's first stores licensed to sell marijuana legally to anyone 21 or older opened in Colorado on Wednesday. From Telluride to Denver, thousands of people cheerfully stood in lines for hours to buy legal marijuana after presenting nothing more than identification. Marijuana activists hailed the day as a watershed in their effort to overturn anti-cannabis laws. Store owners — several of whom said the turnout exceeded even their own ambitious expectations — feared running out of supply. Police reported no problems with the crowds, and government officials marveled at the calm. Overall, the day went as marijuana activists had hoped it would: In the most extraordinary way possible, it was ordinary. At least 37 stores across the state were fully licensed and opened to sell marijuana to anyone 21 or over for any purpose, according to official lists and Denver Post research. Sales could commence at 8 a.m., and activists — who campaigned for the marijuana-legalization measure whose passage in November 2012 made the sales possible — arranged a ceremonial "first purchase" at the Denver store 3D Cannabis Center. The store used to be called "Denver's Discreet Dispensary," so the name change speaks to the rapid evolution of Colorado's marijuana industry, which began in earnest only about four years ago. 3D Cannabis Center owner Toni Fox watched the clock carefully as the hour approached and dozens of reporters and photographers crowded into one of her store's tiny purchasing areas. Multiple reports are rolling in about a new “popular” street trend known as “The Knockout Game,” in which young people attempt to knock out random strangers with a single punch. As reports of the “knockout” incidents continued to increase, much of the mainstream media quickly pointed the finger at inner-city minority youth as the primary perpetrators of the new “game” that has even turned deadly in one instance, with two teenage boys sentenced to over a year in prison as a result. However, there have also been more than a few less-publicized “knockout game” incidents involving non-minorities. Two of which being the woman who lied to police about being the victim of a knockout game attack by a group of black thugs when it was later revealed to be a cover-up story for her abusive husband, and the recent arrest of a racist white man who admittedly went in search of a vulnerable African-American person to attack while playing the game, resulting in the severe injury of a 76-year-old black man. Both of these incidents, along with others that are sure to surface, beg the question of whether or not inner-city minority youth should really be bearing the burden of the blame for the growing popularity of “the knockout game.” Do you think the media is misplacing the blame on young black teens? An Ohio teacher who told one of her African-American students that "we don't need another black president" has been suspended without pay after allegedly making racially insensitive statements to a student earlier this month. Monday, the Fairfield Board of Education suspended science teacher Gil Voigt. He has 10 days to request a hearing before the school board or a referee. Voigt, who is white, is accused of telling an African-American male student, “We do not need another black president” after the student said he would like to become president. The incident occurred on Dec. 3, with several other students present, according to a report from Assistant Superintendent Roger Martin, who conducted a disciplinary hearing on the matter. It isn’t the first time the 14-year Fairfield teacher has been disciplined. He received a verbal warning for making an inappropriate racial comment in 2008. Story provided by: Bossip.com

Five teens were arrested by Jacksonville, Florida deputies when a scuffle broke out on Christmas night involving nearly 600 patrons outside a movie cineplex. Tevyn Alonza Davis(pictured right), 19, was charged with resisting arrest and breach of the peace; Jaquade Marquis Miller(pictured center), 18, was charged with fighting and resisting arrest; and Khalil Ahmad Bradley (pictured left), 17, the only minor charged with a felony, was arrested for resisting arrest, refusal to disperse and breach of the peace. Two other juveniles, who had not been identified by police, were charged with misdemeanors. The ruckus reportedly began after a group of youths tried barging into the theater without paying for admission, while several others rushed an off-duty policeman working as a security guard. The officer, according to the police report, followed protocol after he was assaulted, which consisted of administering pepper spray to disperse the group. The officer then locked the theater’s doors and summoned for emergency backup. The pepper spray is what apparently sparked the brawl that broke out. Reportedly, about 600 or more patrons began fighting and vandalizing parked vehicles. Sixty-two officers were called to the cineplex to try to bring some order to the chaos that had broken out. Luckily, no gun shots were fired and only minor injuries and property damage was reported to authorities. Story provided by: NewsOne

“Duck Dynasty” star Phil Robertson really stepped in some mess when he made comments to GQ Magazine stating he believed Black people were happier before the CivilRights movement. The comments were so controversial that A&E, the channel that airs “Duck Dynasty,” suspended Robertson. However, people are coming to Robertson’s defense citing speech. The debate over whether Robertson should remain suspended or be reinstated has taken over the internet and now Rev. Jesse Jackson is throwing his two cents in. Rev. Jesse Jackson was so angry about Phil Robertson’s comments, he compared them to the actions of the bus driver who demanded Rosa Parks relinquish her seat in the front of the bus to a white passenger. Jackson stated, “These statements uttered by Robertson are more offensive than the bus driver in Montgomery, Alabama, more than 59 years ago.” Jackson went on to say, “At least the bus driver, whoordered Rosa Parks to surrender her seat to a white person, was following state law. Robertson’s statements were uttered freely and openly without cover of the law, within a context of what he seemed to believe was "white privilege".   Rev. Jesse Jackson is demanding a meeting with the top executives at the A&E channel to make sure they uphold Phil Robertson’s suspension. He also wants a meeting with some executives of Cracker Barrel. They are continuing to support Robertson. Jackson is so serious about this meeting that he set a deadline for the companies to agree to the sit down. There is no word on whether they will actually honor Jackson’s request. Story provided by: The Urban Daily

A white Houston-area man was arrested Thursday on federal hate crimes charges for allegedly shooting video of himself sucker-punching a 79-year-old black man in a "knockout game"-style attack. Conrad Alvin Barrett, 27, made a brief appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge Frances Stacy, who scheduled a detention hearing for the Katy man on Friday. According to prosecutors, the attack happened Nov. 24 in Katy, but it wasn't until 12 days later that authorities connected the attack to the cellphone video of it. Authorities learned of the case because Barrett allegedly showed the video on the night of the attack to an off-duty arson investigator he had just met at a restaurant in nearby Folshear. According to the criminal complaint, Barrett asked the off-duty investigator and the woman with the investigator if they knew about the knockout game. He told them he played earlier that day, then showed them the video, prosecutors allege. The investigator then flagged down a uniformed officer across the street and led him to Barrett. The attack video doesn't show Barrett's face, but investigators matched his voice to the voice in the video and the couple at the restaurant told investigators that Barrett was wearing the same shorts and shoes at the person who shot the video. Former Death Row Records boss Suge Knight landed himself in a mess of controversy earlier this week when he told TMZ that he would rather be called a ni**er rather than African-American. Knight’s opinion led the gossip site to put a poll in the post asking whether Black people should be called African-American or ni**as. Well, that didn’t sit well with Public Enemy frontman Chuck D and he had a few choice words for TMZ and Suge Knight. Chuck D does agree that African-American isn’t a proper term to describe Black Americans because technically actress Charlize Theron is African-American. However, Chuck D says the n-word is too connected to a history of blood, lynchings, and oppression to just be thrown around the way it is. “Being called Black in America is the struggle to keep us moving and breathing over bloody water. Being a Nig**r or [Ni**a] without the context of history is like drowning in bloody water, dragging down those yet knowing to swim.” As a matter of fact, Chuck D believes that any rapper who uses the epithet in a song more than three times is just being lazy and shows a lack of creativity. So these young rappers better get on their jobs because they use the n-word all of the time, which means they need to get more creative with their wordplay. Story provided by: The Urban Daily

In 1987, Singer/songwriter Kashif had a big hit with the song “Love Changes.”Actor turned singer Jamie Foxx covered the song in 2005 and it couldn’t be a better song to describe his transformation in the public spotlight. Born in Terrell, Texas, Jamie was a goofy athlete with a mean jheri curl. Despite being a big fish in his small town, he knew he had to leave Terrell to find happiness in his professional life. However, not only did Jamie’s move from Texas to Hollywood set him on a wonderful trajectory towards stardom, it also put Jamie on a path of personal discovery. When Jamie Foxx first hit the scene on the hit sketch comedy show “In Living Color,” he was known for being that guy who played the ugly girlfriend named Wanda. During that time, Jamie has said he was selfish and only cared about himself and was void of any responsibility. Things started to change for him when “In Living Color” went off the air and he became the lead on his own sitcom. During the five years he worked on “The Jamie Foxx Show,” Foxx began to open his eyes to things outside of himself and he learned that through his profession. Though he knew he had great comedic timing, he didn’t realize exactly how much the other actors in the scenes helped create the perfect set up for a Jamie Foxx one liner. Working with the cast of his sitcom prepared him for dealing with the biggest role of his life. Jamie Foxx is a leading man because he is a prime example of how you can grow up in the public eye without having to lash out in the process. There are plenty of younger celebrities who could use an example like him. Story provided by www.theurbandaily.com
