James Avery, best known for his role as Uncle Phil on "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air," has died. He was 68.Avery's manager confirmed his death in a statement Wednesday. Avery died Tuesday in Glendale due to complications from open heart surgery, according to the statement. Born James La Rue Avery in Virginia, Avery was raised in Atlantic City. After high school, he served in the Vietnam War from 1968 to 1969 as a member of the U.S. Navy. After returning home, Avery moved to San Diego, where he wrote poetry and TV scripts for PBS.
